Miami Dolphins trade linebacker Jaelan Phillips to the Philadelphia Eagles, according to AP sources

The Miami Dolphins traded outside linebacker Jaelan Phillips to the Philadelphia Eagles ahead of the NFL's trade deadline, according to sources that spoke with the Associated Press and . 

Miami will receive a third-round draft selection in 2026 as part of the deal, while Philadelphia adds another defensive piece to strengthen its faltering pass rush.

It's a move that reunites Phillips with Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, who was in that same role with Miami in 2023. And Phillips was on pace for a huge year that season before a season-ending Achilles tendon tear, with 6 1/2 sacks and 43 tackles in only eight games.

Phillips, who has three sacks through nine games this season, has totaled 26 in five years with the Dolphins. He was drafted by the Dolphins from the University of Miami in 2021, and is making $13.3 million in the final season of his rookie deal. He'll be a free agent following the season.

The trade underscores a period of transition in Miami. The trade is the first one orchestrated by Dolphins interim general manager Champ Kelly, who assumed that job after longtime GM Chris Grier parted ways with the franchise last week.

The struggling Dolphins, now 2-7, are reportedly open to additional moves involving pass rushers Bradley Chubb and Matthew Judon, according to ESPN.

Phillips leaves Miami after making an immediate impact as a rookie, setting a franchise record with 8.5 sacks in 2021 after being drafted 18th overall.
