2 dead, 3 others injured in crash in Philadelphia's East Germantown neighborhood, police say

Two people died, and three others were injured in a crash in Philadelphia's East Germantown neighborhood Monday night. 

Police said the crash happened just after 8 p.m. when they attempted to stop a Nissan that was speeding westbound on Godfrey Avenue. The Nissan then struck a Honda at the intersection of 20th Street. 

As a result of the crash, the Nissan lost control and hit five parked cars. Three people were ejected from the Nissan, Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small said at the scene.

The male driver of the Nissan had to be cut out of the vehicle, Small said. Police said he was pronounced dead on the scene.

Three other passengers were taken to the hospital, where a 19-year-old passenger died. The two other passengers, a 16-year-old and a 20-year-old, are in critical condition, Small said.

The driver of the Honda, a 72-year-old woman, was taken to the hospital in stable condition. 

Small said officers at the scene found a semi-automatic gun that was broken in several pieces. There were also several rounds in the Nissan. 

According to police, bricks on the front porch of a home on West Godfrey Avenue were also damaged by a spare tire. 

Small said it's unclear if the passengers who were ejected were wearing seatbelts.
