Man accused of assaulting fire official surrenders after barricade in Tacony, Northeast Philadelphia, police say

A man who allegedly assaulted a Philadelphia Fire Department official before barricading himself inside a Northeast Philadelphia home on Friday has surrendered to law enforcement, police said.

Around 9:50 a.m., Police responded to the assault and barricade situation Friday morning on the 7100 block of Jackson Street, a police spokesperson said.

Officers learned that a fire lieutenant was assaulted by an unknown man who then fled into a home.

Police said the fire lieutenant was assaulted after responding to a report of diesel fuel being dumped in a front yard.

Authorities said the lieutenant arrived at the home in the 7100 block of Jackson Street and was invited inside. Once inside, he was attacked and placed in a chokehold. He was not injured and was able to call for backup.

Police then declared the situation a barricade incident and notified the SWAT team. Images from Chopper 3 showed SWAT units on the scene.

When officers entered the home they discovered it was empty. The suspect had fled but later surrendered to police.

No injuries were reported.
