Eaglet hatches in Pittsburgh's beloved bald eagle nest

Pittsburgh's beloved bald eagles have hatched their first egg of the season. 

The egg hatched on Thursday morning in the nest in Pittsburgh's Glen Hazel neighborhood. The eagles laid their first egg of the season on Feb. 24. There's a second egg in the nest that could hatch soon. 

The couple, formerly called the Hays eagles, moved across the river after a storm blew down their nest in 2024. There was speculation about whether the eagles would rebuild after the storm, but the 2025 season came and went with no eggs. Then the Hays eagles were spotted across the river in Glen Hazel in a new nest.

While it's not the first eaglet in the Glen Hazel nest — two chicks were spotted last season — it is the first egg in the nest since a camera was installed, allowing people to watch the eagles again, continuing a tradition that began in 2013. 

The last time there was a camera on the nest in 2024, the eagle pair had only laid one egg, and it cracked, failing to hatch. 

Meanwhile, the eagles in the nest at U.S. Steel's Irvin Plant in West Mifflin already have two eaglets in their nest, and it's possible a third one might hatch. Last year, Ocho was the only one of the three eggs in the nest to hatch. Ocho accidentally fledged in June when he was practicing his flying and fell.
