Driver injured in Oakland road rage shooting on Highway 80 transition ramp to Highway 880

A motorist on Interstate Highway 80 in Oakland was injured in a shooting early Friday morning, authorities said, just hours after another Oakland freeway shooting during the Thursday afternoon commute.

The California Highway Patrol said officers were dispatched at about 5:45 a.m. to a report of a shooting on the eastbound I-80 transition ramp to southbound I-880 in Oakland. 

The CHP originally reported that the driver had been shot in the head, but was conscious and able to speak with officers who arrived at the scene. CHP spokesperson Sgt. Andrew Barclay later clarified that the driver had been struck by shrapnel, not a bullet, and the incident was being investigated as a road rage incident between the victim and suspect that led to the shooting.

No suspect information was given. The driver was taken to a hospital, and the person's condition was not known.

The CHP said the transition ramp was closed from just after 6 a.m. and reopened at approximately 9:41 a.m.  

Anyone with information about the shooting was asked to call the CHP investigative tipline at (707) 917-4491.

On Thursday at around 3:45 p.m., another shooting happened on eastbound Highway 24 in Oakland near the Caldecott Tunnel west of Old Tunnel Road. The CHP said at least two vehicles were hit by bullets from a passing vehicle. A suspect was arrested after crashing his car into the center divide on southbound Interstate 680 near Olympic Boulevard in Walnut Creek.
