2 fatally shot inside Chick-fil-A in Irving; suspect in police custody

IRVING — A man suspected of shooting and killing two people Wednesday inside an Irving, Texas, fast food chain is now in custody, police say.

The suspect in the shooting at a Chick-fil-A has been identified as 37-year-old Oved Bernardo Mendoza Argueta.  

"We do believe this was a targeted incident and not a random act of violence," Anthony Alexander with the Irving Police Department said. "There is no threat to the public."

According to an arrest affidavit, Argueta's wife works at the Chick-fil-A. 

The Dallas County Medical Examiner identified one of the victims as 49-year-old Patricia Portillo. The other victim has been identified as 31-year-old Brayan Alexis Godoy. Both victims were employees of the restaurant.

The Chick-fil-A's local owner-operator said in part, "Our hearts are broken by the tragedy that unfolded inside our restaurant Wednesday. We will miss our two team members dearly. Right now our focus is on providing care for our team and the victims' families."

Police arrived at the Chick-fil-A on North MacArthur Boulevard just before 4 p.m. Wednesday after multiple 911 calls reporting a shooting. They found two people shot inside, Alexander said. Police don't know what led up to the shooting as the investigation is in the very early stages, he said. 

Argueta has been charged with capital murder. 

The Chick-fil-A location is closed Thursday, according to the company's website. It has not said yet when the location will reopen.
